2024 Indigenous Girls Golf Summit

The first ever 2024 Indigenous Girls Golf Summit pilot project took place September 20-21, 2024 at the St. Paul Golf Course and was a success, encouraging Indigenous girls to ‘Tee It UP’ and learn about the physical, psychological, and social benefits golf can offer.

The goal of hosting this event was to boost confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills of Indigenous girls in the province through guidance from inspiring professional Indigenous women in golf. This pilot project was intended to see the interest in such an event and determine the possibility of hosting similar events in other areas of the province in the future.

Instructors at the event included LPGA Class A golf coach Destiny Whitney, two-time Canadian Long Drive champion Irene Crowchild, 7 Generations Golf Association creator Andrew Fox, Portage College coach Lyric Lewis, as well as up-and-coming university level golf stars Maggie Buffalo and Ava Stach.

Day one began with lunch and registration and rotating groups learning tips and tricks of different golf shots. Day two saw a panel and Q&A with professional golfers, instructors and university athletes.

The afternoon saw a 9-hole fun scramble and was followed by sharing a group meal.

The event was supported in part by Edmonton’s sporting charity Sport Central who supplied equipment for participants – thank you Sport Central!

FNHC staff member and organizer Lannie Houle was interviewed on CBC ahead of the event, listen to the interview here!
