Alberta Native News: Everyone Has a Dream: Indigenous Youth Gather in Celebration and Culture at 2025 Teepee Summit

EDMONTON, AB

The First Nations Health Consortium (FNHC) hosted its 4th Annual Youth Teepee Summit from July 29–31, 2025, at the Northeast River Valley Event Centre in Edmonton. The three-day event welcomed over 400 Indigenous youth and chaperones from across Alberta to engage in cultural, physical, and educational activities under the theme “Everyone Has a Dream.” Emceed by comedian and chicken dancer Conway Kootenay, the Summit inspired youth through ceremonies, workshops, and guest speakers, all grounded in Indigenous culture and teachings.

Highlights included a powerful grand entry, drumming by Chubby Cree, and performances by the A’sitapiiksi Powwow Club. Youth crafted dreamcatchers, cooked bannock, and watched the play “Circles,” focusing on healing and identity. Māori youth from New Zealand also joined, sharing traditions and creating international connections. Workshops were held in traditional teepees and included storytelling, mental wellness, and Treaty education led by Gwen Muskwa.

Guest speakers like Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, athletes, and TV personalities encouraged youth to pursue their dreams. The Indigenous Sports Council of Alberta announced tryouts for Team Alberta for the 2027 North American Indigenous Games. With resource booths and community support, the Summit stood as a vibrant example of cultural celebration, empowerment, and reconcili-ACTION.
